Ohio State is No. 2 with six first-place votes. Defending national champion Georgia is third with three first-place votes. Clemson is No. 4 and Notre Dame rounds out the top five. The Tide’s preseason No. 1 ranking is the seventh in 15 years. Since the preseason rankings started in 1950, only Oklahoma has been No. 1 in the initial poll more than Alabama.
The old-school Princeton basketball coach Pete Carril has died. He was 92. A statement from Carril's family says he died Monday. The statement did not give a cause of death. Carril was a cigar-smoking Hall of Fame coach who led Princeton to 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. His teams gave big-time opponents fits with constant motion, quick passing and backdoor cuts. He coached Princeton for 29 years and won more than 500 games. In 1989, his Tigers nearly knocked off a No. 1 seeded Georgetown team. He later worked as an assistant with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.
The University of Texas says Steve Worster, the powerful fullback in a bruising wishbone offense that led the Longhorns to the undisputed national championship in 1969, has died. He was 73. Worster rushed for 2,353 yards and 36 touchdowns from 1968 to 1970. Texas won three Southwest Conference titles with a 30-2-1 record over that span. Worster was a consensus All-American in 1970 and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting that season. The school said Worster died on Saturday and did not give a cause of death.
Atlanta and South Florida have been selected to host College Football Playoff national championship games for the second time. The CFP announced that Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, would be the site of the title game scheduled to be played in January 2026, the final game of the current 12-year media rights deal with ESPN. Miami Gardens hosted the 2021 game, following the 2020 pandemic-altered season. Attendance was limited to about 15,000 fans. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Atlanta would host the championship game in 2025. Mercedes-Benz was the site of the 2018 title game.
